Where to find us in November

MEIN12 launches in Coconut Grove with Bart Kuykens, then Brundage Brothers Cars & Coffee in Miami Springs, the Glenn Curtiss show, and the DRIVEN Concours at The Abbey in Aventura.

November is a busy month for us, and for once most of it happens away from Sunset Drive. It starts on the first morning of the month in Coconut Grove, with a book launch, moves to Miami Springs, the town where Porsche first found a home in South Florida, and ends on the lawn at The Abbey in Aventura.

Sunday, November 1 · From 7:30 AM

MEIN12 in Miami

November opens with a book launch. Together with Bart Kuykens and Navi Coffee & Flowers, we are co-hosting the Miami launch of MEIN12, Bart's new photozine on the Porsche 912, at Navi, 3213 Grand Avenue in Coconut Grove. Bart will be there from 7:30 AM to sign copies, and he is bringing a set of his photo prints. All cars are welcome.

A photographer who shoots film

Bart is Belgian, and he shoots film, mostly in black and white, on a Hasselblad H1 and a Leica. He did not care much about cars until his thirties. His first Porsche was a burgundy 3.2 Carrera; today he drives a 1970 911 T.

In 2015 he started photographing friends' Porsches. One of the first was a 912 belonging to a friend in the Netherlands. The rolls kept coming, and they became A Flat6 Love Affair: seven volumes, one for each letter of PORSCHE, so the spines spell the name on the shelf.

Since then he has photographed owners from California to South Florida, for To Live and Drive in Los Angeles and Dream and Drive in the 305.

The photozine

MEIN12 is all 912: 160 pages at 240 by 300 mm, made for people who love the four-cylinder car for what it leaves out.

Bart shot much of it himself, alongside photographers and 912 owners from both sides of the Atlantic. Bring your copy, or pick one up on the day, and have it signed.

Navi is a coffee shop and a flower shop in one room on Grand Avenue. It is named for Navideh, the founder's mother and the shop's head floral designer; in Farsi, her name means good news. From the window seat you can watch the arrangements being made while you drink your coffee.

Brundage Brothers Cars & Coffee

This month's Cars & Coffee leaves the showroom and goes to Miami Springs. Brundage Brothers Cars & Coffee, part of Brundage × Glenn Curtiss, starts at 8:00 AM at 53 Curtiss Parkway, before the Glenn Curtiss show. Registration for the morning is free, and every Porsche is welcome, from early 356s to the newest GT cars. Bring whatever you drive; the rest of us will want to see it.

It is a morning built around one idea: Where South Florida Porsche culture started. The address is not an accident.

Brundage Motors, Miami Springs

In the 1950s, Hubert Brundage ran a small Volkswagen shop in Miami Springs called Brundage Motors. It did not stay a Volkswagen shop for long. Porsches soon shared the floor, and the sign on the corner read Porsche Sports Cars sales and service.

Brundage did not only sell the cars. He raced the cars he sold.

Business grew, and the cars arrived by ship. Brundage moved north to Jacksonville to be closer to the port. He became the Volkswagen distributor for three states, and then the Porsche distributor for the entire Southeast.

A name, shortened

Distributors in those days traded by telex, and the telex address had no room for Brundage Motors. It was cut down to five letters: Brumos.

The short name stuck. In 1960 Brundage raced a Porsche at Sebring under it, and the Brumos name would go on to become one of the most famous in American sports car racing after Peter Gregg took over in 1965.

The Volkswagens reached well beyond the showroom. Brundage Motors supplied Beetles for driver training at Paxon High School in Jacksonville, lettered on the doors with the school's name and the dealer's.

Brumos ended up in Jacksonville, but it started here, in Miami Springs. On November 7, the Porsches come back to the same town where Brundage Motors first opened its doors.

Then, the Glenn Curtiss show

From Cars & Coffee it is a short walk to Circle Park for the 3rd annual Glenn Curtiss Vintage Motorcycle & Car Show, which opens at 10:00 AM and runs until 5:00 PM. Porsche is the featured marque this year, and the show is judged, with awards at 2:00 PM. There is live music through the day, and proceeds go to the Fathers Against Fentanyl Foundation.

One thing to know before you go: saving your spot with us covers Brundage Brothers Cars & Coffee in the morning only. It does not register you or your car for the main show. If you want to show a car at the Glenn Curtiss show, register through the show directly.

The fastest man on earth

Glenn Curtiss is best remembered as an aviation pioneer, and in South Florida as the man behind Miami Springs, Hialeah and Opa-locka. But before any of that, he built engines, and he went fast on the ground.

In January 1907, on the hard sand at Ormond Beach, he rode a V-8 motorcycle of his own design at more than 136 mph. Newspapers called him the fastest man in the world.

Saturday, November 14 · Aventura

DRIVEN Concours

A week later we will be at the DRIVEN Concours at The Abbey at Aventura, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Presented by Turnberry Associates and duPont REGISTRY Group, it follows the DRIVEN Cars & Coffee that drew more than 500 guests and over 100 cars to The Abbey during the Miami Grand Prix weekend in May.

Design, craftsmanship, and the stories behind the cars. Our kind of show

This time the format is a full concours, with hospitality, food and live entertainment around the show field. Collectors and dealers will be there, but so will families and people seeing a concours for the first time, which is exactly the kind of crowd we like. Details are at DrivenAventura.com. Come and say hello.
